Parish Magazine – July 2021

WHO KNEW WE HAD SO MANY SUPERHEROES IN HANBURY?

These are just a few of the superheroes I have come across since being appointed as Chair of Hanbury Parish Council – I’m sure you all have more and I invite you to share them in future articles of the magazine..

MAKE SURE YOU READ TO THE END – I’VE SAVED THE BEST TO LAST
NEW WEBSITE

Firstly, our sincerest thanks go to Ian Garner who has completely overhauled the HPC website which you can now find at www.hanburyparishcouncil.org.uk or by linking through from the village website www.hanburyvillagestaffs.co.uk.  It is accessible and user-friendly; you can easily find all the up-to-date news about issues on your local council that affect you. Important documents, meeting dates and minutes and how we spend the small portion of your council tax that comes to the village are all detailed on the site. We will post important news items here as well as via the notice boards and Village Facebook page (Hanbury Village Staffs), so make sure you check out one of these regularly to keep up to date.

HANBURY PLAYING FIELD AND COMMON

Ginormous thanks go to Joanne and Nigel Storr of New Lodge who most generously donated £2500 to spend on improving facilities for children in the village. This has kick started an amazing campaign of fundraising and ideas to really enhance these two areas of open space in the village.

With the emphasis on the environment, natural play and sustainability we gathered ideas from councillors and parishioners young and old to come up with plans for both areas. Year 6 students at Needwood Primary School, Jack Allsopp and Jake Law volunteered to measure up the playing field and Jake’s mum, Jenny, of Woodland Cottage, drew up a plan from the measurements using her amazing computer skills. Our ideas include the planting of more trees and a wildflower garden, a balancing trail of felled timbers, tree stumps and recycled tyres, a willow tepee, garden games and art installations amongst other things. Jude Harrison is championing the project and has already had so many offers of donations of time and materials it is just staggering. See our poster for contact details and how you can get involved. In time, a nature trail will be introduced at the Common with things to find, discovery areas and shelter building.

AND OUR SUPERHERO EXTRAORDINAIRE…

11-year old JACK ALLSOPP of Anslow Rd, was so keen to get involved and support the playing field project that he quite literally got on his bike and raised an incredible £1660 by cycling 10 times round the village non-stop. Yes – you read it correctly – ONE THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED AND SIXTY POUNDS! This money was all raised from sponsorship by the amazingly generous people of Hanbury and also Jack’s friends, relatives and his teachers at school who were so impressed with his efforts. Cheered on by many as he went round and round, he was even joined on some laps by other cyclists although they left him to complete his last heroic lap by himself as well-wishers clapped him on. Jack, words cannot express how much we all admire you – so much so in fact that on Friday afternoon 11th June at the playing field, Hanbury Parish Council was delighted to present you with an incredibly well-deserved achievement award and official letter of thanks in the presence of a crowd of villagers and councillors. Jack’s mum, Annie, then promptly turned the tables and produced a huge cheque to present to us! It was wonderful.

STOP PRESS!!

Judy Ireland’s daughter, Louise and husband, Rick were so impressed when they heard of Jack’s fundraising total that they have donated £400 from their Gas and Water UK Ltd. Current total now £2060!!

Watch out for more fundraising fun coming up to support this fantastic community project.
